I got a Sony 4k tv and a old samsung 1080p tv hook up to a splitter than to my pc so need to change between 4k and 1080p resolution. The monitor configuration only allow me to change desktop resolution not active signal resolution. The only way i can do this with nvidia control panel.

Is this something you're able to set in the Windows display properties too? This could be an nVidia-specific thing.

Would you be able to do the following to help troubleshoot this further?
  • Download this tool: https://www.binaryfortress.com/Files/DisplayFusion/BFCustomerTest.exe
  • Configure the monitor using DisplayFusion Monitor Config, then run the tool and save the output
  • Configure the monitor using the Windows settings so that the Active Signal Resolution is correct, then run the tool again and save a second copy of the output
  • Reply with both copies attached

Thanks!

Hello,

just wanted to point out that I've got the same issue using Display Fusion 9.5 Beta 1
(previous steam downloaded version also has the same issue)

When changing resolution with DF 9.5b1, Active Resolution Signal is 4k.
Whereas with windows or Nvidia control panel it is

This issue is blocking when you need to send a FHD signal :
(HDMI cable length or target device hdmi limitation)

Thanks for your help.

Just a quick update on this, we've opened an issue on our list for forcing the active signal resolution. I'm not sure how much work it will be, but we'll definitely let you know when we have it done so that you can test it out.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say I'm having the same issue. Whether Display Fusion is set to clone the 4k display @ 1080p with another monitor, or if it's set to extend alongside my other monitors, it doesn't matter what I have the resolution set to; it doesn't work. I can get it if I set it to only output to the 4k monitor and nothing else, but that is not ideal. Someone higher up was speculating that active signal resolution might be an NVIDIA thing, and I just wanted to clarify that it's not. If you open Windows display settings, and scroll down to advanced display settings, you'll see it's a part of Windows. In the attached screenshot, I was able to make this method work on my gtx770, but after it fried and I replaced it with an rtx2070, I haven't been able to get it going since. When you click apply in the box on the screenshot, the cursor spins for a few seconds, but otherwise nothing happens, and my desktop resolution is set to 1080p with a 4k active signal resolution, with no picture on the screen. Also, I've noticed that it gets really wonky with 30hz vs 60hz; it keeps trying to drop down to 30hz when you try to set it, even though the monitor is capable of 60hz, and coincidentally it appears to put a very heavy load on explorer.exe whenever it is attempting to configure the displays. I hope this info helps you track down whatever the cause is. Here are my specs as well:

DF 9.5
i7 4770k
32GB RAM
MSI RTX2070
6x viewsonic 27" 1080p monitors (top 3 from IGFX, bottom 3 from RTX2070)
1x TCL 65" Roku TV (from RTX2070 and (ideally, if you guys can get this fixed) cloned with bottom middle monitor)

Haven't seen any updates on this post since May; wanted to make sure it doesn't die before it gets resolved. Thanks guys!

Thanks for the additional info! We've made a change in an internal build of the next beta. If you'd like to give it a try, you can download it here: DisplayFusionSetup-9.6-Beta1.exe

Please let me know how it works out. Note that you might need to re-save your Monitor Profiles after updating to this build.

I have this same problem using the Steam version of DF, and never thought to bring it to your attention. lol

The only place I seem to be able to change the active signal resolution is in the NVidia Control Panel. Windows display settings also seem to only change the internal resolution, upscaling it to 4k... at least in every attempt I've personally had.

I put my 4k in 1080p for various reasons (cloning, gaming, streaming, etc), and while it can natively support 1080p, both Windows settings, and DF refuse to use true 1080p.

Since I use the steam version, how would I go about testing this beta? do I need to uninstall the steam version, then install this beta?

You can just download and install the beta with the Steam version, it will automatically pickup your Steam license with no issues. :)

Thanks! I tested by setting to true 1080p, and saving. When I changed to 4k, then changed back to 1080p, it was still upscaled.

This happened both with an overwrite, and a new save. Is there an option that I'm supposed to change first?

If you setup your monitors with Windows (or the nVidia control panel) first then save that as a DF profile, can you load that later successfully?

When I use Windows settings, (which don't change the active resolution) yes. When I use NVidia (which i use to force active display resolution) no.

When forced with NVidia, saved, and then returned to later, it still has the 4k active display resolution. Still has to be overridden by NVidia to get the display to change to real 1080p.

Ok, we've re-opened this ticket and we'll take another stab at it. I can reproduce the issue here now, so that's some progress anyway. It looks like that Active Signal Resolution change was intended in the Windows 10 Spring 2018 update: https://mspoweruser.com/windows-10-preview-build-17063-pc-brings-improvements-numerous-settings/

I noticed if you go into the adapter properties in the Windows settings and click "List All Modes" and choose the resolution from there, it sets the ASR properly as well, so that's a good sign that we should be able to find a way to set it through the Windows API. I was initially afraid that it was an NVIDIA specific thing.

Anyway, we'll keep you updated when we have more news.

Thanks!

Just to add - this is definitely not Nvidia specific. I am using an AMD graphics card and am having the exact same issue.

My circumstances: I have my PC connected to a 4K TV using a Wyrestorm HDBaseT extender. The HDBaseT extender / cables simply aren't high enough quality to run 4K flawlessly (I get occasional snow and sound cutting out), so I need to stick with 1080p. However when switching to a profile with this display active at 1080p, the Active Signal Resolution is set to 4K - which has the same issues as running true 4K.

We've just released a new DisplayFusion beta version, could you try it out and let us know if it works any better?

A couple of things you can try:
  • Re-create the monitor profiles
  • Try setting the display settings through Windows, then save that as a profile and see if it loads correctly

Thanks!

I have tried DisplayFusion 9.6 Beta 5 and this has not fixed it unfortunately.

I set the adapter settings correctly in Windows so that both the desktop resolution and the Active Signal Resolution were 1080p. I saved this as a new Monitor Profile. I swapped to to another profile/screen and then swapped to the new profile. The desktop resolution was then 1080p but the Active Signal Resolution was now 4K again - same problem as with the DisplayFusion 9.5.

I tried this a couple of times and the result was the same.

Ok, nuts! Could you attach a new copy of your DisplayFusion troubleshooting info from 9.6 Beta 5?

  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button
  • Reply with the file attached

Please see attached troubleshooting info.

In these logs the new monitor profile (created when the Windows adapter settings were set to 1080p) is named "Test". I created the logs after switching back to this profile and finding the ASR was set to 4K.

Just to add that I've found a SuperUser post that references a third party utility that sucessfully saves and restores monitor settings from a file including the Active Signal Resolution. I've tested this and it does indeed work.

If these guys can figure it out, then hopefully DisplayFusion can? :)

I hope it's not against the rules for me to link this: https://superuser.com/a/1470967

This should be all fixed up in DisplayFusion 9.6.2 Beta 1. Please note that you may need to re-create your Monitor Profiles after updating. Please let us know if you still run into any trouble after updating.

Thanks!

The way to change the active signal resolution in Windows 10 is as follows.

Right-clicking the desktop, and choosing "Display Properties", and changing the display resolution in this window doesn't work. Instead, scroll further down in this window (down toward the bottom) and click "Advanced display setting". Now, on this new page/window, click "Display adapter properties", and a new window will open. On the "Adapter" tab, click the button "List All Modes", and a new window will open again. In this new window, scroll and click the resolution you want, then click ok (that window will close). Now, on the previous window, click apply. This will change the active signal resolution as well.

One glitch to be aware of... This happened to me... If you've already tried changing the resolution from 4k (3840x2160) to 1920x1080 (for example) the way I mentioned above that doesn't work, then when you first load up the window that lists all the display modes in the adapter settings, it will show 1920x1080 (or whatever resolution you chose in the normal display properties window). However, in order to make it change the active resolution to this, you will need to choose a differnt resolution from the "List All Modes" window, apply it, then go back into the "List All Modes" window, choose the resolution you want, and apply it. Now, the active signal resolution will change as well. Hopefully that makes sense, seems like a long description to describe a simple problem... lol

My recommendation is to never change the resolution in the normal display properties window. Instead, you should always just change the resolution through the Display Adapter properties Window through the advanced display settings, and the desktop resolution and active signal resolution will both always change and be in sync.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone. :)

Nicely done! This appears to have resolved the issue!

NVidia users can get the correct active resolution by changing the resolution, then set scaling to be done on display, and enable override in the nvidia control panel

I can confirm this is now working for me with my AMD graphics card.

Though confusingly I'm not on 9.6.2 Beta 1 as was requested; it's working for me on 9.6.1 stable.

(I also didn't have to recreate my monitor profiles.)

Details don't matter though; in any case I'm happy :). Thanks Keith Lammers!

This doesn't seem to be working anymore in Windows 10, using the Steam version of DF v10.1.2. This is a fairly fresh install of Windows 10, so not sure if there is something I missed.

@jasoncollege24: Could you try rolling back to 10.0 and 9.9 to see if the same issue exists in those versions? You can leave your Steam version installed and install these over top of it. Download for them are here: https://www.displayfusion.com/OldVersion/

You'll need to re-create the monitor profiles in each version you test, as the way they're saved is slightly different in each one.

The issue persists in 10.0, but not 9.9. For both tests, I had my display in 4k at the time of install.

for 10.0, I used the existing "4k" profile as a starting point, and created "1080ptest" after switching configurations with the "List all modes" method.

in 9.9, I created "4ktest", switched using "List all modes" method, and created "1080ptest2"

To test, I used DF to switch to "4k" then back to the test resolution in both tests.

Can I safely upgrade back to the latest via DF's update prompt from 9.9?

Edit: I reinstalled 10.0 then updated via the update prompt. When loading "1080ptest2" (created with 9.9) from "4k" it worked as intended. This means upgrades from 9.9 to latest will likely not have this problem, if they used their original 9.9 monitor profiles after upgrading, instead of creating new ones.
